As Ghent’s civic theatre, NTGent is faced with a new and challenging page in its history. After the successes of the director Johan Simons’ time as artistic leader, when NTGent made its breakthrough onto the international theatre scene, the core of permanent actors is now taking over the reins itself, under the leadership of actor and musician Wim Opbrouck. NTGent is increasingly presenting itself as a company of actors.

They will as a group continue down the road taken by Johan Simons. NTGent intends to build on its strengths and to make exciting, international, Flemish-Dutch actors’ theatre not only based on the play itself, but also approaching theatre from such related disciplines as music, dance, poetry and art.

This healthy artistic curiosity keeps the company on its toes and is embodied by a series of guest directors (Christoph Homberger, Eric De Volder, Ivo Van Hove, Koen Augustijnen and, still to come, Theo Boermans, Jan Eelen, Luk Perceval, Gerardjan Rijnders and Julie Van den Berghe). An essential element is the pleasure of acting.
